George H. W. Bush was the Republican candidate that ran against Democrat Michael Dukakis.
53% of the popular votes went to Bush and 46% went to Dukakis.
George H. W. Bush got 426 electoral votes and Dukakis got 111 electoral votes.
The New President
:
Former World War II pilot, that had won a metal for bravery.
Served as a member of congress, an ambassador, and director of the Central Intelligence Agency.

Drugs, Education, and the Environment
:
He appointed William Bennett to be a special "drug czar".
He also promised to chart a new course for the environment and education.
The cleaning up and repairing the plants might rise to 200 billion dollars.
The Savings and Loan Crisis
:
Encouraged people to save their money.
A recession in New England led to more saving bank failures.
In the 1990's the collapse of S&L's weakened the banking system in general.
Reducing the Deficit
:
In the 1988 election George H. W. Bush pledged to not raise taxes.
"Read My Lips" "No New Taxes" Said by President Bush.
Bush and congress came up with a plan to drop our deficit by 500 billion in 5 years.
The Election of 1990
:
The budget agreement had reduced the deficit more than any legislation during the Reagan years.
In the 1990 election congress found voters in an angry mood.
In most states only 4 out of 10 eligible voters went to the polls.
Flags and the Supreme Court
:
In 1989 in Texas a law was passed that burning the American flag was a crime.

On July 1990, Justice William Brennan announced his retirement.
